The Tonto National Forest has reached a final decision regarding the adoption of a management plan for the Apache Leap Special Management Area (SMA).

Forest Supervisor Neil Bosworth recently signed a Decision Notice to implement the Proposed Action for the Apache Leap SMA management plan.

Six individuals, two of whom represent a group’s interests, have submitted objections to the Southwestern Region of the Forest Service regarding the Apache Leap Special Management Area and associated plan amendment for the Tonto National Forest.

Forest Service officials want to remind the public and interested parties they have until October 10, 2017, to submit an objection to the Forest Service’s selection of the Proposed Action for the Apache Leap Special Management Area management plan.

The Tonto National Forest has completed an Environmental Assessment (EA) and issued a Draft Decision Notice for the adoption of a management plan for the Apache Leap Special Management Area (SMA).

Forest Supervisor Neil Bosworth has selected the Proposed Action for the Apache Leap SMA management plan based on a review of the EA. Development of the EA, along with the management plan, incorporated consultation efforts with affected Native American tribes, elected officials from the town of Superior, Arizona, and members of the public.

Forest Supervisor Neil Bosworth’s selection of the Proposed Action for the Apache Leap Special Management Area management plan – which recommends approval of the management plan while concurrently amending the forest plan -- is subject to the pre-decisional objection procedures identified in 36 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) part 219 subpart B.

The Tonto National Forest will offer a 30-day public comment period from July 1 through July 30, 2017, to collect feedback on suggested changes to the proposed management plan for the Apache Leap Special Management Area and forthcoming Forest Plan amendment that would incorporate the new management direction.

Forest Service officials will meet with interested members of the public April 4 in Superior, Arizona, to update attendees on the Forest Service’s management plan for the Apache Leap Special Management Area.

As Tonto National Forest officials begin drafting a management plan for the Apache Leap Special Management Area, interested parties have until January 31, 2017, to provide inputs to help forest officials craft content during development of the management plan.

Tonto National Forest officials will meet with the Town of Superior’s mayor, town council and interested members of the public January 12 regarding establishment of the Congressionally-mandated Apache Leap Special Management Area.
